FILM REVIEW :National Treasure
IS(takane JAPAN)
“National Treasure” is an Adventure, Action Thiriller and Historical movie, set in the United States in the 18th century and present-day. This film’s story starts, on a night in the U.S. in 1838. After the Civil War, Tomas Gates was given the secret of the treasure from Carls Carrol, who was a member of the Freemasons. The secret was the treasure of “the Knight Templar.” Then, Tomas, he died, saying “ The Secret lies with Charlot.”
The main character is Benjamin Franklin Gates(Nicolas Cage) who is a Historian and Adventurer. When he was a child he knew the story of the treasure from his grand father in Washington DC in 1974. The story of the Knight Templar. Thereafter, Benjamin and his friend Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) who has computer and hacking skill, with Ian Howe (Sean Bean) who is Benjamin’s financier, found out that there was “an invisible map” of the treasure in the Declaration of Independence. Ian said “I will steal it.”, so Benjamin and Riley conflicted with him, and went to the FBI and Dr. Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) at the National Archives to warn about Ian’s plot, but they didn’t believe it. Therefore, tried to protect the Declaration of Independence and treasure from Ian. After all Benjamin decided to steal the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin and Riley carried out the plan on the night of the National Archive’s anniversary-gala
The main characters are not stereotypes. Abigail, is an attractive scholar and full of passion for history. I think Benjamin is an interesting character, because he has a historical knowledge as well as a skill of engineer. Also he has a sense of values; there is something more important than “money”. This movie describes the importance of traditional sense of values, such as family, friendship, cooperation, instance, equality and belief. In addition this film is interesting for us, the reason why Justin Bartha and Jon Voight act not only individually but also naturally. It goes without saying that Ted Elliott is an excellent screen writer.
Is the secret true? The dispute estranged Benjamin from Patrick Henry Gates who is Benjamin’s father (Jon Voight). The relation between father and son is recovered by finding out “treasure”. The theme is so heart -warming.
The film looks like “The Da Vinci Code” and “Indiana Jones”. However, the movie presents the contrast between history and computer science, adventure and gorgeous party, comedy and serious drama. The adventure scene is ordinary, but this movie has themes more than the amusement. We can see many historical monuments and places in the U.S.A., the National Archives, the Library of Congress, and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, the Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, and the Trinity Church in N.Y. Also the story presents some historical topics and things, some idols of the Egyptian civilization, the Freemasons, the Temple of Solomon, and the scrolls from the library at Alexandria. In addition this movie introduced to us Benjamin Franklin’s (an actual historical person) maxims and great achievements. It is a good chance that we are interested in world history and the archaeology of the Old Testament, especially for children and teenagers.
What is the true secret of the treasure of the legend? --I think that “National Treasure” means the National idea of the United States. We can find it from some conversations and dialogues of the main characters, Benjamin and Agent Sadusky (Harvey Keitel), who is an FBI agent.
“National Treasure” was made by the stuffs “Pirate of Caribbean”. The film distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Jon Turteltaub in 2004. The music composed by Trevor Rabin was so powerful and cool. Therefore, it received the BMI Film Music Award in 2005, and what’s more, the sales were over $347,451,894 worldwide in 2005.
